||G-21: Formation of Zr-Cu-Al-Ag-Ti Bulk Metallic Glass Composites with Deformation Induced Martensitic Transformation

Formation of bulk metallic glass composites (BMGCs) by introducing crystalline phases into glassy matrix is a very effective way to improve the mechanical properties. It is known that the the B2 crystalline CuZr can transfer to monoclinic B19’ phase and improve the deformation behavior and the work hardening behaviour. In the present work Zr-Cu-Al-Ag-Ti with different compositions and diameters were prepared by the copper mould casting. The minor addition of Ag enhanced glass forming ability (GFA) with critical casting diameter up to 6 mm. The mechanical properties were examined by the compression and tensile test. The deformation induced martensitic transformation causes strong work hardening of maximum compressive strength up to 2135 MPa. It also contributes to the large compressive deformability with plastic strain 16.3%. The samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and the microstructures were examined by the scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscope (TEM).
