Rural pollution has attracted increasing attention over the past decade in China due to its important consequences on surface and groundwater quality. By estimating the total rural pollution loads of COD, TN and TP, the spatial distributions of was mapped. Then analysis was conducted to investigate the correlations between rural pollution loads and agricultural production outputs, as well as population. The loads were focused on the aspect of agricultural activities including livestock farming, aquaculture, irrational use of fertilizers and pesticides, and domestic garbage. Finally, the present methods in the treatment of sewage were summarized for the reference of specific practice, consisting of oxidized pond, constructed wetland and subsurface wastewater infiltration system.
