Abstract Scope A Molten Metal on Demand (MMOD) prototype system has been designed to fit into the die casting manufacturing process. This technology reduces manufacturing costs, since keeping large amounts of molten metal is no longer required. Instead, metal is melted just before being poured, which also provides flexibility to manage operation changes. This study presents an experimental approach to some of the parameters governing the induction melting technology such as current, current frequency, voltage, and cooling fluid. These parameters are studied with the purpose of determining experimental correlations that allow the projection of the heat induced into the sample and the time it takes to melt the sample. The design specifications for the MMOD prototype are refined in the die casting context. The results are presented on an efficiency basis to analyze the gap in energy consumption between the traditional induction technology and the MMOD system developed for this research.
