||Magnetic Phases in the Systems Mn-Bi, Mn-Sb, and Mn-Bi-Sb

Several magnetic phases have been reported and frequently investigated in the Mn-Bi and Mn-Sb binary systems. For instance, the isostructural NiAs-type phases MnBi and MnSb as well as MnSbBi thin films have been studied previously due to their superior ferromagnetic and magneto-optical properties. However, little is known about the phase relationships in the ternary Mn-Sb-Bi system. In the present study, two isothermal sections at 320 and 600°C of the ternary Mn-Bi-Sb system were investigated, and the binary Mn-Sb phase diagram was reassessed experimentally. In addition, a new and simple method to obtain bulk amounts of the ferromagnetic compound MnBi was devised. Magnetic measurements on MnBi as well as on ternary Mn-Bi-Sb compositions were made with a superconducting quantum interference device magnetometer in cooperation with the MPI of Chemical Physics of Solids in Dresden, Germany.
