Significant research efforts are being directed towards developing fuel cladding system capable of withstanding accident scenarios. SiC/SiC composite is one of the several materials being considered for the improved cladding integrity. A thermo-mechanical analysis of SiC/SiC cladding has been performed using the nuclear fuel performance code BISON. The recently available properties of SiC/SiC composites and phenomenological understanding of material evolution under neutron irradiation and elevated temperatures were employed for obtaining the best estimate of the thermo-mechanical behavior of the cladding. The dependence of various properties on irradiation and temperature were incorporated into the analysis for predicting the in-reactor performance. The analysis provides insight into the design challenges and viability of the SiC/SiC composite cladding concepts for LWR systems.
