||SPG-28: Microstructure and Mechanical Properties of Inconel 718 Produced by Selective Laser Melting: Sample Orientation Dependence and Effects of Post Heat Treatments

Inconel 718 manufactured by selective laser melting (SLM) is investigated with the focus on microstructure, the dependence of sample orientation on the mechanical properties in both as-manufactured and heat-treated conditions. The as-manufactured IN718 has a very fine cellular-dendritic structure, fine Laves phases and weak textures in both vertically and horizontally built samples, but the vertically built sample shows lower tensile strength than the horizontally built sample. Heat treatments can significantly increase strength, dissolve Laves phase and minimize the mechanical property differences in the vertically and horizontally built samples. Based on these results, the mechanisms for strengthening and anisotropic behaviours are also discussed.
